The BCSC is an independent agency of the British Columbia government reporting to the Legislature through the minister responsible for the administration of the Securities Act. Being a Crown Corporation gives us the independence and flexibility we need to regulate a dynamic market. We are self-funded, which means that the cost of securities regulation is borne by market participants, not taxpayers.
Alberta
Securities Commission
The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is the industry-funded provincial corporation responsible for maintaining the efficiency and integrity of the capital markets in Alberta.
We develop and enforce securities regulation, and offer impartial educational information and resources to Albertans about the investing process.
Ontario
Securities Commission
The Ontario Securities Commission administers and enforces securities legislation in the Province of Ontario. Our mandate is to:
- Provide protection to investors from unfair, improper and fraudulent practices
- Foster fair and efficient capital markets and confidence in their integrity

The System for Electronic Document Analysis and Retrieval (SEDAR) was developed in Canada for the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) to:
- facilitate the electronic filing of securities information as required by the securities regulatory agencies in Canada;
- allow for the public dissemination of Canadian securities information collected in the securities filing process; and
- provide electronic communication between electronic filers, agents and the Canadian securities regulatory agencies

The primary mission of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is to protect investors and maintain the integrity of the securities markets. NASDAQ
NASDAQ is the largest U.S. electronic stock market. With approximately 3,300 companies, it lists more companies and, on average, trades more shares per day than any other U.S. market. It is home to category-defining companies that are leaders across all areas of business including technology, retail, communications, financial services, transportation, media and biotechnology. NASDAQ is the primary market for trading NASDAQ-listed stocks. Approximately 54% of NASDAQ-listed shares traded are reported to NASDAQ systems.

The OTCBB:
- provides access to more than 3,300 securities;
- includes more than 230 participating Market Makers;
- electronically transmits real-time quote, price, and volume information in domestic securities,
- foreign securities and ADRs
